Sport, medicine and international exchange come together in Oberammergau: as part of the König Ludwig Lauf 2027, the 27th World Medical Cross-Country Skiing Championships for Physicians and Pharmacists (WMCC) will take place in Oberammergau.
Cross-country skiing is one of the most versatile endurance sports. It combines strength, coordination and stamina while engaging almost the entire body. This unique connection between sport and prevention inspired the creation of a dedicated World Championship in cross-country skiing for physicians and pharmacists, alongside the international championships in triathlon and duathlon.
Today, the event is supported by the Triathlon-Verein deutscher Ärzte und Apotheker (TVDÄ), which was established in 2016 as the successor organisation to the former International Medical Triathlon Association (IMTA).
Who Can Participate?
Eligible to compete in the official WMCC championship classification are:

licensed physicians

licensed pharmacists
-
enrolled medical students
-
enrolled pharmacy students
All WMCC participants will also automatically be included in the regular König Ludwig Lauf classification.
Age groups for both the WMCC and the König Ludwig Lauf are determined according to the DWO regulations in five-year age categories.

Start & Classification
Participants in the World Medical Cross-Country Skiing Championships will generally start in Start Group 1. Separate starting regulations apply to elite athletes.
In addition to the WMCC classification, all participants will automatically be included in the official results of their respective König Ludwig Lauf race.
The WMCC awards ceremony, including the presentation of awards for the respective age categories, will take place during the event weekend.
Sports Medicine Symposium
Where athletic performance meets medical expertise.
On Saturday, 6 February 2027, the traditional Sports Medicine Symposium will be held at Klinik Oberammergaualongside the World Championships.
The symposium provides a platform for current topics in sports medicine, prevention and performance diagnostics, as well as professional exchange between physicians, pharmacists and other experts.
The topic, programme and speakers for the 2027 symposium will be announced in autumn 2026.
